Keyboard Character
keys
•
The main part of a
keyboard is made up of character keys. A
character can be a letter, number, punctuation mark, or symbol. The character keys are used for typing words
and numbers.

keys

Delete key – it
removes characters in front of the cursor

Backspace key – it
removes characters behind the cursor
•
Enter key (return key)
– it tells the processor to start a new paragraph or to perform a function
•

a letter or symbol

Other keyboard
keys

Caps Lock –
Capitalizes all letter characters
•
Alt – Used as a
shortcut key. The Alt key
allow you to select a Menu command with the keyboard. Hold down the Alt key and select the
underlined letter of the Menu item.

Ctrl – Used as a shortcut key. The Ctrl key allows you to carry out a
command with the keyboard. Hold down the Ctrl key and select the underlined
letter of the command.
•
Function keys – (f1
through F12) perform special functions.
For example, to spell check a document press
F7.
•
Insert key – Toggling the
insert key on and off allows you to either insert
new text within existing text in a document or to overtype the existing text in a document with new text.
•
Numeric keypad – When the
Num Lock light is on, the number keys on the pad are operational. When the Num Lock light is off, the Home, PgUp, End, and PgDn keys are
operational.
