Types of Systems Software

1. Operating Systems Software operates its own resources and other resources to control the computer and peripherals.
2. Applications Systems Software is used to perform specific tasks like accounting, word programming, scientific analysis, etc.

Operating System Software

• Operating System software is software that allows the coordination of the various components of the computer system.

• Enables you to copy data files, controls printers, reads whether you are using a floppy disk or hard disk, etc. Controls other programs, software, and hardware.

• Disk Operating System (DOS)

• Microsoft Windows

• Macintosh Systems

• Unix

• Linus

Categories of Operating Systems

1) Command Line systems require typing commands into what appears as a blank screen. Know as a Disk Operating System or (DOS).

2) Graphical User Interface (GUI) Operating System allows users to perform actions by selecting them from a graphical representation of the action, or ICON.

Word Processing

• Allows you to compose text documents like letters, reports and memos.

• Allows you to work with figures and perform numerical analysis functions like budgets, price comparisons, scientific analysis, etc.

• Software examples include:

– Microsoft Excel

– Lotus 1-2-3

Database

• Allows you to collect data and to process data into useful information. Designed for managing contact lists, product information, demographic data, etc.

• Software examples include:

– Microsoft Access

– dBase

– File Maker Pro

Presentation Software

• Allows you to create presentations to be displayed on your computer screen. Designed for product demonstrations, sales presentations, budget presentations, etc.

• Software examples include:

– Microsoft PowerPoint

Accounting and Payroll

• Allows you to control corporate accounts, invoicing, ordering, and inventory and payroll accounts.

• Software examples include:

– Quickbooks

– Great Plains

Desktop Publishing

• Allows you to create newsletters, brochures, fliers, etc.

• Software examples include:

– Adobe InDesign

– Adobe PageMaker

– Quark Express

Web Design
Allows you to create Web sites that can be accessed from the Internet.

• Software examples include:

– Microsoft FrontPage

– Macromedia Dreamweaver

Programming Languages

• Allows you to create your own specialized applications. Especially useful if you can not find a packaged product already on the market.

• Software examples include:

– Microsoft Visual Basic

– C++

– Fortran

Multimedia

• Allows you to create animations and special effects.

• Software examples include:

– Macromedia flash
